How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents females that are of an age varying from 15-25 and who are therefore YUPPIE’s (Young, Upwardly-mobile professional) or YAKS (Young, Adventurous, Keen and Single). I think this because the articles featured are based on up and coming talent and a lot of young adults are interested in keeping up with what’s new. I have also involved a lot of gig and festival information which appeals to girls of this age range and type in particular as they have no major commitments, and therefore have money to spend and are generally interested in these sorts of events. The price of my magazine is also quite cheap. It is £1 which seems like a reasonable price for my target audience as even though they could have a bit of spare money for leisure activities they will probably not be too willing to spend it on things like magazines. Therefore with a reasonable price I am able to cater to their needs.

This issue of my magazine would appeal more to girls. Mainly because the colours used are bright pinks and purples. Although, these colours were used to emphasize the main cover line as it is 'Neon Smile'. Even though the main image is of a female, which could also attract male attention because of 'sex appeal', I think she is looking more friendly than sexy. I also chose a model like this because of the natural beauty and femininity she has. Therefore she would appeal more to women as they would see her as a best friend but more importantly a idol. Stereo-typically there is also a lot of things that relate to the female audience such as the colours used, vintage shopping, gigs and festivals and also the nonthreatening, friendly style of the magazine as a whole. Not forgetting the images that back up natural feminine beauty throughout.

My target audience is men and women so even though the main cover may not be so male friendly some of the content is. For example my cover lines involve events and interests shared between both sexes. For example I have involved food, gigs, festivals, artists and traveling. I have also involved a male group at the top which could appeal to men and women. Men because they like the music and women becuase of the same reason but also they could fancy the band.

  1. This post is not quite about representation. You have represented a middle-class teenage female in a particular way (friendly and un-threatening, interested in parties, shopping for vinate clothes etc etc). Overall is the representation a stereotypical one? Are your images and your choices of content ones which back up stereotypical assumptions of teen femininity or are they ones which challenge them? Another exampe is your choice of model - does the model reinforce assumptions about feminine beauty or challenge them?

  2. On another point your products have a lot of spelling errors, even in a pull quote on the DPS... You need to get these sorted.
